It’s time for Sandcastle Challenge 2017

It’s that time of year …….Sandcastle Challenge 2017 is here!

BIM Strategy Director, John Adams and Lyndsy Hutchinson, Part 1 Architecture student at Niven, have spent the morning at Sedgefield Hardwick Primary School helping three groups of children to develop their design for the fantastic Sandcastle Challenge which is to be held on the beach at South Shields this Friday, 7th July.

This year’s theme is ‘Great Northern Inventors’. The aim of the event is to pair each school with a ‘construction professional’ who works with the children to design a sandcastle to reflect the theme. In the process, the children have an opportunity to find out about the range of occupations available to them within the construction sector – many of which they may be completely unaware of e.g architects, information managers – as well as have a lot of fun and plenty of fresh North East air (sadly, the weather is invariably unseasonal for July but the children don’t notice !)

The event is organised by the charity, Children North East, which raises huge sums of money to help disadvantaged children and their families in the region. The Sandcastle Challenge is a really popular event in many schools calendars. The first Challenge took place over twenty years ago – Niven took part in the inaugural event when just 6 schools were present  – last year more than 1700 schoolchildren took part.

This is John and Lyndsy’s first Sandcastle Challenge: there’s a lot riding on the result  – Niven are former winners! They’ve got a lot to live up to.
