Niven and Walter Thompson focus on another successful collaboration14 Nov 2017 | Written by Karen Crowe
We are really pleased to report that one of our projects in Middlesbrough has recently started on site. The Contractor for the project is Walter Thompson who Niven recently collaborated with on the award-winning St Teresa’s Hospice
St James House, a former Lloyds Bank building, located on a prominent corner of Albert Road – one of the main thoroughfares in the centre of Middlesbrough – is being remodelled, on behalf of Atha Developments, into student accommodation. St James is in an ideal location just a few hundred yards from Teesside University’s main campus and, upon completion, will provide 59 high-quality studios, each with ensuite bathroom and kitchen facilities.
Scheduled for completion by the end of June, the re-design will ‘breathe new life’ back into a building which has stood empty for some time – making it somewhere people can enjoy living and working in. When finished, St James will also provide a visual link from Central Square to the emerging ‘Food Quarter’ off Baker Street and Bedford Street.
The development will retain the existing commercial space on the ground floor in order to provide activity at street level. The new design updates the existing large shop front glazing through the addition of stone clad pillars and makes a feature of the entrances. The upper levels of the building will retain the original brick with window openings being enlarged to create light and airy living spaces: the studios on the top floors will providing extensive views over Central Square, MIMA and much of the town.
