Niven Architects - Barnard Castle School Masterplan.jpg

Barnard Castle School is an independent day and boarding school located on the edge of Barnard Castle in Teesdale, Co. Durham. In recent years, the school has tended to grow and adapted to meet its requirements as and when needed, rather than in a strategic planned manner. As the school looks to the future, Niven has been appointed to develop a 20+ year masterplan incorporating several significant new buildings and spaces together with a method to move forward in a strategic and coherent manner.

Whilst the school occupies a large site which has the potential to accommodate its requirements, there are a significant number of constraints which may affect any development. For example, the site is dominated by two listed buildings; the Grade ll Main School Building (completed in 1886) and the adjacent Grade ll* Chapel both of which, together with a large part of the school site, lie within the Barnard Castle Conservation Area. Also, adjoining the site is the nationally important Grade I listed Bowes Museum and gardens.
