Niven Architects - Langhold Crescent.jpg

The brief for this project was to transform an existing vacant site in a Conservation Area  – surrounded by back lanes and garages  – for residential use.

In so doing, we produced a contemporary design which referenced the features of the surrounding traditional buildings, many of which are single storey garages and would provide the client with a single 1.5-2 storey dwelling with amenity space, parking and a double garage. To maximise the floor area, an element of double storey height was incorporated into the design.

Central to the design was the need to orientate the building to minimise any concerns about overshadowing of neighbouring properties and to ensure it sits well, contextually, in terms of its size. Also, in order to achieve a coherent design sympathetic to its surroundings, considerable focus was placed on the choice of materials.
