MC Ionic Solutions UK, part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, recently approached Niven to help them expand their production/supply chain capacity for one of their products, which has seen a significant rise in demand. As the product is distributed internationally, the client’s need for production, storage and management on its Billingham site needed to be reviewed.

The Phase 1 brief was to produce additional storage and office space as well as ensure the design was able to facilitate future expansion including infrastructure, SUDS drainage and trafficking routes.

The site provides several challenges for any design team given the nature of its industrial, chemical and processing operations. In addition, the environmental impact of the building requires consideration as there is established vegetation and the site is close to the Teesmouth & Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area and the Billingham Beck Wildlife Site, which is 300 metres away.

However, working closely with our Structural Engineers, we have produced a feasibility design capable of satisfying all the client’s requirements which also ensures all the current demand manufacturing and processing requirements can be incorporated correctly into the well organised site.

Whilst this is a challenging project, we welcome the opportunity to play our part in helping to expand exports and secure future business for the Tees Valley Area.
