Niven Architects - Middlesbrough College Sixth Form.jpg

Niven Architects were commissioned by Middlesbrough College to undertake the design of a new 6th Form College located at the historic Middlehaven site on the banks of the River Tees.

The design solution for MC6  was based around a red cube which cleverly weaves in the facade of an old sail making works which is a listed building. This ensures a link between the new and the old whilst providing wonderful views of the iconic Transporter Bridge. The building consists of a 2,200 sqm centre designed to cater for 500 students and staff and features 13 classrooms, changing facilities plus a cafe, bistro and a student common room. The site also provides comprehensive outdoor sporting facilities including an Astroturf pitch which allows local community usage.

Phase 1 of the building achieved BREEAM ‘Good’ through its use of passive ventilators and solar panels which provide hot water underfloor heating. Due to the immediate success of the building, Niven were commissioned to work on Phase 2.
