Niven has worked together with Northern School of Art (formerly CCAD) on several projects. Following a rise in student numbers we were asked to review their existing accommodation.
After analysis of the college’s spatial needs, Niven proposed the best solution was the restoration of the Grade 2 Listed Municipal and Leadbitter Buildings, formerly used by the local authority and adjacent to the College’s existing buildings in Church Square.
Niven were able to create a number of unique inspirational teaching and tutorial spaces for students by successfully blending contemporary design with the heritage of the listed buildings. These included the former council Drafting Studio which was converted into a new fashion design studio (above), the original library which was restored to provide a new fashion library resource and offices converted into industry standard film and TV production facilities.
This project has been particularly rewarding as it brought two empty unused building back into use and also helped to rejuvenate an ageing part of Hartlepool by creating a vibrant and exciting cultural quarter. The finished buildings provides a stimulating resource for fashion, graphics, TV and film students; one where the environment contributes actively to their learning.
