Niven Architects - Northern School of Art, Green Lane Campus.jpg

The Northern School of Art is one of only three specialist further education arts and design colleges in the country.

The client’s brief was to provide space for students of the quality commensurate with NSOA’s long term plan for acquiring Higher Education status. Social and learning resource space was therefore highlighted as a priority for re-development in order to both attract and retain a thriving student population.

Green Lane Campus sits at the centre of one of the suburbs of Middlesbrough. The site has been adapted, sporadically, over the years to meet changing educational needs; as a result, it had become disjointed in its layout. The design integrated existing buildings and focused on developing an underused quadrangle into a light, attractive and appealing atrium common room with easy access to a newly refurbished refectory and reception area.

The scheme produced an inviting social area where students are able to meet, eat and relax as well as a much needed Learning Resource Centre.
