Niven Architects - St James Studios.jpg

St James Studios are located in a prominent position in the centre of Middlesbrough, 200 metres from Teesside University’s main campus. A former Lloyds Bank, the building had been empty for some time. before our client, Atha Developments purchased it to refurbish into student accommodation.

60 spacious high specification studio apartments have been created each incorporating a kitchen area and breakfast bar, en-suite bathroom, sleep and study areas. All rooms have fast unlimited internet access, Smart TV and cleaning services in addition to access to an on-site cinema, games and study rooms.

Externally, the building has been given contemporary update with the large shop front glazing broken up by the addition of stone clad pillars and both entrances feature strongly in the new design. The upper levels of the building, whilst retaining the existing brick, have had the original window openings enlarged to create light and airy living spaces.

The studios have proved extremely popular. Atha Developments achieved 100% occupancy before construction was finished and well ahead of schedule.

On the ground floor Atha & Co solicitors have occupied the prominent corner units facing onto both Albert Road and Grange Road. This leaves one remaining commercial unit and design work to convert this into a new boutique bar will begin shortly.
