The Beehive building forms part of a network of Camphill Village Trust (CVT) Community Houses which are located in and around the Malton area of North Yorkshire. CVT provide care for adults with complex learning and behavioural disabilities. The Beehive forms part of the Trust’s Croft site set amidst two acres of organic fruit orchards, vegetable and flower gardens located on the eastern edge of the town.
The original accommodation consisted of 5 individual bedrooms. The Trust commissioned Niven to conduct a feasibility report to establish the best design solutions for providing high quality lifetime accommodation for young adults with learning and physical disabilities.
In order to meet their needs, the internal space was remodelled to provide two ground floor bedrooms and two 1st floor bedrooms accessible by a platform lift located in the entrance hall. In addition, a new single storey extension was created to provide independent living facilities in the form of a communal and fully accessible kitchen with a motorised hob unit for use with wheelchairs, accessible height oven and specialist kitchen ranges suitable for adults with limited mobility, in addition to a communal garden room.
