Niven Architects - The Bowes Museum, New Galleries.jpg

Niven were appointed to assist the Museum secure Heritage Lottery Funding for the proposed modernisation and redevelopment of the museum. The application was successful and Niven Architects were asked to undertake the design for ‘The New Gallery Project’ which formed the first stage of the rolling programme to renovate and modernise the museum

In addition to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the development was supported by both private sponsors and the European Regional Development Fund. The initial stage of funding encompassed the conversion of surplus office space in the museums west wing which involved the remodelling of outdated office accommodation on the ground floor to create three new contemporary styled ‘key or ‘index’ galleries.

In addition, the Museum’s Fire and Access Plan was upgraded to provide the full inclusive access to the buildings required in modern public buildings.

All of the work was carried out in close collaboration with English Heritage, the museum and the local planning authority in order to minimise the disruption to the museum and as well as damage to the fabric of the building
