This security upgrade for West Yorkshire Police was undertaken following several recent terrorist incidents. Because of these, West Yorkshire Police needed to be able to utilise their existing building stock on their Wakefield HQ site and bring the facility up to recognised security levels.
To meet the rigorous standards, a ‘ring of steel’ was created around the whole city centre block. As this work was in progress, minimal disruption to the live police headquarters also had to be maintained. The detailed brief and schedule of requirements provided a starting point for the design which included a new security gatehouse, fencing, window and door upgrades together with the restoration of a Grade II listed property on Northgate to provide offices for a relocated police station staff base.
Niven worked closely on this D & B project with Clugston Construction to achieve an efficient and successful outcome.
